Well I have finished Flush, by Carl Hiaasen, and I must say I am a fan! The ending seemed predictable until I realized the book kept going and led you on one last twist and turn. Great book for a "read aloud" especially I think. It will keep kids intrigued, laughing, and very entertained!
I am now listening to City of Orphans, another Newberry Award winning book by Avi. I am a HUGE historical fiction fan, so just the topic of the book interests me. It is set in New York City around the time of The Great Panic, 1890s. Main character is a Danish born 13-year-old boy named Maks who is a newsie (for those of you young enough to remember the Disney movie Newsies, you'll be interested in that!). He is befriended, more like "saved" by an orphan girl named Willa who carries a big stick and sleeps in an alley.
I love learning about history through a story of someone's life during this time period, and I think the same rings true for most students. While the only annoyance I have with this book is the narrator's voice, I imagine it will be another smashing hit by Avi. Can't wait to finish it.
